Deep Relaxation and Hypnosis - Say Bye-Bye Stress!

Here's the scenario:

   It's Monday morning - 7:45 - and you're just pulling out of th driveway. Late again. Before you put the keys in the ignition you have already counted the stop lights between here and there. No time for your usual route and drive through for java. You could go 4th Avenue, but there's construction on the bridge. No good. Blood pressure rising...Heart pounding... Now what...? 

RELAX!

     Stress is a term used in physics to describe an external force that produces distortion or strain in metals. Seventy or so years ago the Canadian researcher Hans Selye redefined stress as:  "the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change." That served us well when we were being chased by dinosaurs...not so well in 8am traffic.
     How do you change your biological response to stress?  Simple...By changing your 'mind' about the stressful situation! The problem, of course, is that most of us have been conditioned to respond a certain way, so we go on autopilot. Self hypnosis and visualization can help you re-direct those thoughts. When the mind and body are in sync, anything is possible.
     So let's start again:  It's Monday morning - 7:45 - and you're just pullin out of the driveway. Late again. No time fo ryour usual route and drive through for java... Wh

BREATHE!

     Inhale a long, slow deep breath - exhale long, until your lungs are empty. Start the ignition. Pull out of the driveway and take another long, slow breath. Again a long exhale to empty the lungs. Breathe normally, and begin imagining that you are on your way to the beach, or the woods for long quiet walk. Allow that scenario to take over your planning for the drive to work. Continue to allow the relaxing sensations of the visualization to work their magic in relieving the stress of being late. Remind yourself that hurrying will not get you there any faster.**

     You will arrive at work at about the same time you would if you didn't do this exercise. It's possible you'll be in such a great frame of mind that your boss and co-workers will wonder what was in that coffee...

**NEVER listen to a relaxation or hypnosis cd/mp3 while driving!. Visualization is similar to daydreaming, and is a naturally occurring process in the mind. The purpose of this exercise is only to relieve a stressful situation.
